52 Years Ago Today ....

On THIS day (for it is now 29 Feb - leap day) in 1964 West Ham beat Burnley 3-2 in the FA Cup 6th round en route to Wemb-er-ley.

1 Jim Standen

3 Jack Burkett
4 Eddie Bovington
5 Ken Brown
6 Bobby Moore
7 Peter Brabrook
8 Ronnie Boyce
9 Johnny Byrne 2
10 Geoff Hurst
11 John Sissons 1

Possibly the most exciting game I have ever been to.

Me and my oldest mate Vince queued up twice to get tickets the week before.

In attendance was My Dad,Brother,Vince and myself.

Official Attendance was 36,651 !!! No way !! the place was chocker and the word was over 40,000 ! you couldn't get your fags out of your pocket.

52 years ago ! My God.

The semi was marvelous too, one of the best - Man Utd Best, Charlton, Law. Ticker got 2 and Hurst finished them off. A prime lesson in the importance of the FA Cup. And Johnny Byrne was majestic, the English Di Stefano!

Seriously, it's true that Ticker did take some grief, not everyone liked him

Ronnie Boyce was the Mark Noble of the day, he even had his own stalker, a black cab driver by the name of Ford something

Looks fun.
What weirdly stood out to me in these pictures is no advertising, anywhere around the pitch or on the stadium. Looks better, if that picture was taking today we would be blasted in the face from all angles from about 10 different companies.

Re: 52 Years Ago Today ....
I remember it well. Burnley had very, very good teams back in the early sixties.
That game and the semi against Man U were probably the best two matches we played that year.
Although we won the final we actually made hard work of it against Preston.

Then on to the semi final at Hillsborough where we got soaked right through. Coming home on the train in leaking shoes and the smell of damp clothing on everybody. Everything was dry by the time I got indoors.

This was one of "the B team" lineups of the early/mid 60's. Seven of them having surnames beginning with "B"!

Re: 52 Years Ago Today ....
I was there Ted in the west bank, ground was heaving full up an hour and a half before kick off 1-2 down at half time but a great second half put us ahead.I went to every cup game that season including the best west ham performance the semi final at Hillsborough but couldn't get a ticket for the final, if I remember correctly the allocation was only 17000 per club which was disgusting. Still great memories.

Re: 52 Years Ago Today ....
I was six, and had no interest in football.

Caught the bug three years later, which meant I missed the best of times for a West Ham supporter.

My old man wouldn't take me to football until I was thirteen (citing the danger of me getting my glasses broken in the crush, but I suspect he wanted to go to the pub with his mates without me in tow), so I really only missed the scraps that got on the telly in those days.

My dad tried to teach Ronnie Boyce music at East Ham Grammar. Apparently Ronnie was no musician.

Remember it well, Ted.
I was there (in the north bank).
I always thought Johnny Byrne was brilliant.
